How Is Mesh WiFi Different From A Router?

When fitting your home with Internet access, you're confronted with the choice of either a mesh WiFi system or go with a traditional router. While both ultimately come together for the same purpose of providing your device with Wi Fi signal, the method by which each device goes about providing the said connection is vastly different.

Differences Between A Mesh Router & A Traditional Router

A mesh wifi system is different from a router in several ways. Firstly, mesh networks create a single network using multiple devices, while a router typically just has one device. This means that a mesh system has a wider coverage area than a router. While a traditional router does what is required in a small space, a mesh system can cover a much larger area which comes especially useful if your home is larger with many "hidden" spots.

Speaking of hidden spots or the technical term "Wi Fi dead zones" can be caused when you’re using traditional routers in a large home. Thus, if you’re someone who is living in a larger residency, you should opt for a mesh WiFi system instead. A mesh system will provide your home with a more consistent connection as each mesh point is in constant communication with the others. This way, if one mesh point loses connection, the others can pick up the slack and maintain a steady connection. Not to discount the traditional routers completely, just be reminded that when installing a WiFi connection in your homes, make sure to take into account the size of your home and its occupancy!

Mesh WiFi systems typically have multiple mesh nodes or "hubs" which are placed throughout your
home. These hubs communicate with each other wirelessly to create a single network with multiple access points. In contrast, a traditional router will only have one device that is connected to the modem.
In addition, mesh WiFi systems are typically much easier to set up and use than traditional routers. While routers can be tricky to configure, mesh routers often come with an app that makes the process of network settings and managing your network a breeze.

Benefits Of A Mesh Network

You can benefit in several ways when you switch from a traditional router to a mesh WiFi system. As we've seen, mesh systems offer wider coverage areas, are great for solving WiFi dead spots, and are typically much easier to set up and use.

Another big benefit of mesh systems is that they offer seamless roaming. This indicates that as you move around your home, your device will automatically connect to the strongest signal without you having to do a thing. This is a great feature for those who are constantly on the go and need a reliable connection.

Lastly, mesh WiFi systems are scalable. This means that if you need to add more nodes or "hubs" to your network, you can do so without any issue. This is in contrast to traditional routers, which often have limited expansion options.
