How to Setup Parental Controls using the TP-Link Tether App

This Article Applies to: 

Parental control is used to control children’s internet access behavior. On Tether APP, you can specify certain time period for the children to access internet and block some web sites via Parental Control Function.

 

Case 1. If your TP-Link router supports HomeCare function.

This guide will walk you through the steps to setup parental controls through TP-Link HomeCare services. 

Note:  Please connect to your router’s wireless network before following this guide. 

Step 1. Open the TP-Link Tether APP. 

Note: Correct the Time Settings to match your phone’s local time

Step 2.  In the upper left corner, tap the “3-lines” button

Step 3.  Tap on the icon that says “Login” below it.

Step 4.  Sign in to your TP-Link Cloud account or sign up if you do not yet have one.  Click here if you need help setting up a TP-Link Cloud account.

Step 5. Once logged in, tap the Icon for your router.

Step 6  Tap on “HomeCare” at the bottom of the screen.

Step 7. Tap on “Parental Controls”.

Step 8. In the upper right corner, tap the “+” button.

Step 9.  Give the new profile a name and tap “Next”.

Step 10. Select a pre-set filter level for the profile.

Step 11. Under categories, you will have filtered content, some you can change and some you cannot.

Step 12. You can also add any app or website to further enhance the filter rules.  Once you complete this, tap “Next”.

Step 13. You can control how long the devices can access the internet in each profile.

Note:  If you do not set a time limit that profile will have unlimited access to the internet

Step 14.  You can also set a bedtime where all internet is cut off for these devices. Once you setup access and bedtimes tap “Next”.

Step 15. Choose the devices you would like under this profile and then tap “Done”.

Step 16. You will be taken back to the profiles page with the new entry listed.  Next to the name is a “||” button.  You can use this to turn off internet at any time.

Case 2. If your TP-Link router doesn’t support HomeCare function, and your Wi-Fi router support Blacklist and Whitelist for Parental Control.

Such as Archer A7( V5 ) , Archer C60( V2 V3 ) , Archer C8( V3 V4 ) , Archer C9( V4 V5 ) , Archer C6( V2 ) , Archer C7( V4 V5 ) , Archer C1900( V2 ) , Archer C59( V2 V3 ) , Archer C58( V2 ) , Archer C1200( V2 V3 ) , Archer C2300( V1 V2 ) , Archer C900( V1 ) , Archer C80( V1 ).

 

I want to: Control what types of websites my children or other home network users can visit and the time of day they are allowed to access the internet.

For example, I want to allow my children’s devices (for example, a computer or a tablet) to access all websites except only www.tp-link.com and amazon.com from 08:00 to 20:00 every day on Tether APP.

How can I do that?

Here takes Archer C7 V4 as demonstration.

Step 1. Launch the Tether APP.

Step 2. Log in your TP-Link ID. If you don’t have one, please click on Sign Up to create a TP-LINK Cloud ID.

Step 3. Once logged, please click the icon of your TP-LINK device and access it. Then tap on Tools.

Step 4.Tap on Parental Controls and enable it.

 Step 5. Add your controlled devices and set a schedule for these devices.

Note: this schedule is the Effective Time for Parental Control Rules not internet access time for your controlled devices.

Step 6. Set the restriction Policy for the controlled devices. There has two rules, Blacklist and WhitelistClick Blocked Websites, you can add many keywords or websites (for example, TP-Link.com or Amazon.com) for both Blacklist and Whitelist to only allow or block access to the websites containing that keyword.

1) In Blacklist mode, the controlled devices cannot access any websites containing the specified keywords during the Effective Time period.

2) In Whitelist mode, the controlled devices can only access websites containing the specified keywords during the Effective Time period.

Step 7. Click Save and now you can control your children’s internet access according to your needs.

 

Case 3. If your TP-Link router doesn’t support HomeCare function, and your Wi-Fi router only supports Whitelist for Parental Control.

Such as TL-WR841N, Archer C20i, Archer C2, TL-WR840N.

 

For example, I want to allow my children’s devices (for example, a computer or a tablet) to access only www.tp-link.com and amazon.com from 08:00 to 20:00 every day on Tether APP.

How can I do that?

Here takes TL-WR841N as demonstration.

Step 1. Launch the Tether App.

Step 5. Add Parental Device and Child Device. Set the Schedule and Approved Websites for Child Device.

Note: this schedule is the Effective Time for Parental Control Rules not internet access time for your Child Device.

TL-WR841N is using Whitelist as the default Restriction Policy. (In Whitelist mode, the controlled devices can only access websites containing the specified keywords during the Effective Time period.)

 Step 7. Click Save and now you can control your children’s internet access according to your needs.
