In a few cases, your EAP may become bricked during the firmware upgrade. The most common cause is an unpredictable power failure. This article will guide you to enter the Recovery Mode to recover the firmware.

Note: Not all the EAP models support firmware recovery, only EAPs listed below can enter Recovery Mode.

EAP245, EAP265 HD, EAP610, EAP610-Outdoor, EAP615-Wall, EAP620 HD, EAP660 HD

Step 1. Prepare the firmware.

Download the firmware of EAP from the Official website of TP-Link, unzip to get .bin file.

Step 2. Configure the computer for recovery

Go to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings, right-click your Ethernet adapter go to properties -> Internet Protocol Version 4 (for a detailed guide, please refer to How to configure wired TCP/IP Properties of my computer?).

  • If you are recovering EAP610, EAP610-Outdoor, EAP615-Wall, EAP620 HD or EAP660 HD, please set the IP address/subnet mask as 192.168.0.100/255.255.255.0, as shown below.
  • If you are recovering EAP245 or EAP265 HD, please set the IP address/subnet mask as 192.168.1.100/255.255.255.0.

Step 3. Upload the firmware and recover

According to the model of EAP, this step will be a little bit different.

If you are using EAP245 or EAP265 HD

There are two recovery status, active status and passive status

  • Active status

If the system file of the EAP is incomplete, for example, power failure during the upgrade, when EAP is powered on, it will automatically enter the Recovery Mode.

1. Please prepare the PoE adaptor of EAP, connect the PC to the LAN port of the PoE adaptor, and EAP connect to the adaptor via the POE port.

2. Open a browser, input 192.168.1.1 to the address bar, you will enter the following page.

3. Click “Browse” to select the firmware (.bin file), then click “Upgrade”, wait until it finishes, the EAP will reboot and work normally.

  • Passive status

If EAP failed to load the recovery page, or failed to recover by upon method, or you want to recover firmware on you own, you can use this method to recovery the firmware.

1. Please prepare the PoE adaptor of EAP, connect the PC to LAN port of the PoE adaptor.

2. TFTP file transformation is used in this method, PC as tftp server and EAP as tftp client. So a tftp software is required. Here we take tftpd64 as the example.

1) Download tftp64 from the following link and install it.

https://bitbucket.org/phjounin/tftpd64/downloads/

2) Modify the name of the firmware file to “EAP245v3_up.bin” (both EAP245 and EAP265 HD use this name).

3) Open tftpd64, change Current Directory to the directory where you place the firmware, and choose 192.168.1.100 as Server interfaces.

4) Hold the reset button of the EAP, then plug the ETH cable that powered by the POE port of the adaptor in the PoE port of the EAP, keep holding the button for a while until the file transfer windows pops out.

5) After the file transfer finished, the EAP will automatically update itself. So wait for a while, the EAP will reboot and work normally.

If you are using EAP610, EAP610-Outdoor, EAP615-Wall, EAP620 HD or EAP660 HD

1. Please prepare the PoE adaptor of EAP, connect the PC to LAN port of the PoE adaptor.

2. Hold the reset button of the EAP, then plug the ETH cable that powered by the POE port of the adaptor in the PoE port of the EAP. The LED light of the EAP will blink (EAP610 blinks 5 times and EAP620 HD/660 HD blinks 3 times), then solid on. Now you can release the reset button.

3. Open a browser, input 192.168.0.254 to the address bar, you will enter the following page.

4. Click “Browse” to select the firmware (.bin file), then click “Upgrade”, wait until it finishes, the EAP will reboot and work normally.

Note: In this FAQ we use PoE adaptor for the power supply of the EAP. In fact, you can also use other power supply methods, including PoE power supply from a PoE switch, or a power adaptor (for EAP620 HD/EAP 660 HD). No matter which method is used, you need to make sure that the PC is linked with the EAP, and NO DHCP server in the network.
